Simplicity - Part 6

Diane was on edge. Harry kept looking at her, and after than comment that Amanda made, Diane was a little too worked up. She thought about it, and the more she did, the more she was convinced that Harry did have a 'crush' on her, and that Amanda had just seen it the wrong way. Harry Denby couldn't love anyone.

"Are you ever going to let me be nice to you?"

"What do you mean?"

"I don't keep asking you to dinner as a preumpted strike against litigation. I keep asking you because-"

"I'll have dinner with you."

"What made you change your mind?"

"Anyone who can say preumpted strike against litigation with a straight face deserves a dinner companion."

"What time do I pick you up and where?"

"I'll stop by your place."

"You sure?"

"Positive."

Harry smiled at her and Diane wondered if she had done the right thing. This was most definitely not something she would have den a month ago. She would have spat in his face and laughed at him, but now she was going out to dinner with him. Christ.

"Okay."

"No, no, tell him that I will not show up in court for that bullshit." Harry did up his shirt buttons as he spoke. "Now, I have to go, so call me tomorrow, all right? Bye."

He clicked the phone off and sighed.

"Are you sure this is a good time cause we can do this later? It sounded like you had other plans..."

"Oh no, the only plans I had for tonight were taken care of. I already cancelled the dinner date with John and told him to go over to Danny's for some pizza. He'll be fine."

Diane laughed.

"So you and John have a rapport?"

"You could say that. He's about the only one who puts up with my jokes. And he has this habit of winking at me that's a bit unnerving, but hey, we all have our little quirks."

"You ready?"

"Yeah, just a sec."

Harry walked over to her and started patting her down with his good arm.

"Denby?? What the hell are you doing?"

"Making sure you're not armed. I don't wanna end up with a hole in my head if I say something you don't like."

"If you keep this up, I'll have to take your piece."

"Point taken. Let's go."

It was no later then 30 seconds after they had sat down at the table. Harry looked at her surprised and then chuckled to himself.

"She wastes no time I see."

"Come on now. Why?"

"I was under. It was part of the act."

"But you were an alcoholic?"

Harry let his breath out.

"This 'cut-to-the-chase' thing is really hard. Yes, yes, I was."

"Did Don know?"

"What do you think?"

Diane didn't say anything. Harry looked uncomfortable for once since she'd known him. His eyes were studying the checkered tablecloth and she could feel the table itself vibrate from his leg that was shaking under it.

"Did you mean what you said?"

"If I said yes, would you loathe me for the rest of your life?"

"It's possible."

"I meant some of it."

"What does 'some' mean?"

"I can't remember."

"What Diane, in a nutshell, can we say about life? It becomes more tawdry. Dangerous. Filled with more stupidity. Our eyes go. Faculties in general decline. We keep an interest in sex but we begin to shoot blanks. But what we cannot say, Diane, is that life get's less interesting. We can't say that and look at each other in the face as honest men and women."

"What a memory. As it happens, I remember that impassioned little speech as well. Do you want to know what I did and didn't mean? It can get quite extensive?"

"I'm listening."
