Simplicity - Part 7

"Su le finestre mostra a tutti il mio cuore che hai acceso chiudi dentro me la luce che hai incontrato per strada."

Harry's voice was soft and that was all that Diane could hear, sitting out with him on a balcony at a table lit by candles. His breathing was soothing, and kept in rhyme with hers.

"What does that mean? It's beautiful."

Harry shook his dark head and in the candlelight Diane could see the brown scattered through the raven. His hair reminded her of an old crow, unromantic as that sounded. It was a pleasant sun kissed brown where the sun hit the 'feathers.'

"It's not important what it means. It was I thought after I met you that night in the bar."

"It sounds familiar."

"That's because it probably is. It's from the Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman duet, 'Time to say Goodbye.'"

"But won't you tell me what it means?"

"Nah. I prefer to have you guess until you can look it up."

"You're an ass."

"Precisely."

Diane smiled, feeling silly. She was learning to like this part of him, and after he had told her his motives for what happened in the bar. He was deep under, trying to get a ton of hard evidence against Don and some Dominicans. He got too far involved, but didn't end up a coke addict, contrary to what he told her a while back. Diane was beginning to see that his ulterior motives where not as bad as she had thought.

"Why don't you tell all this to the precinct? I'm sure Danny would love to give up an excuse for wasting all that energy hating you."

"Then I would have no excuse to continue hating blonde boy. What's the fun in that?"

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

"All right, I'll attempt to befriend your little cop buddies. Now, onto better topics."

"I like you when you're like this."

"Like what?"

"Relaxed. Not sprouting philosophies and words like the fountain of youth. Your an attractive person like this."

"Thank you."

He looked her in the eyes when he said it, and Diane got chills up her spine. He was becoming undeniably attractive to her, and she was having to fight to keep her pulse normal. Maybe if she had a heart attack he'd give her mouth to mouth. Ooooh...

"I want to see you again like this."

Diane raised an eyebrow.

"Outside of work?"

"Not necessarily. Happy is what I was going for, though the other sounds good to me."

"It can be done if you keep this up."

Denby leveled his eyes at her.

"I'm not just taking you out to dinner to get in your pants, lovely though they may be."

"I'm starting to realize that now."

Diane leaned in, expecting him to kiss her. When he didn't she blinked in surprise. Harry was staring at her with a knowing expression. She flushed, leaned back and glanced at her watch.

"Shit, it's late. We have work tomorrow. Let's do this again sometime."

"Let's."

They got up, and this time Harry did lean in, but he picked up her hand and brought it to his lips.

"Goodnight, my lovely Diane."

Diane beamed.

"Goodnight, Harry Denby. Sleep well."

"Oh I will."

Later on that night, after she had showered, Diane brought out her Sarah Brightman cd. She opened up the lyric book, and studied the page till she got to the part she was looking for...

"From every window, unfurl my heart, the heart that you have won. Into me you've poured the light, the light that you found by the side of the road."

Continued in Part 8.
