The Couple

Madoka Haneoka/Madoka Narumi

Kiyotaka Narumi

Appearances

Spiral - the anime

Madoka Narumi is married to Kiyotaka Narumi, who has been missing for two years.

Spiral: Bonds of Reasoning - the manga

As in the anime, Madoka is married to Kiyotaka Narumi, who has been missing for two years. Later on in the manga, Kiyotaka returns to the side of his wife, and continues to be with her even two years later, at the manga's end.

Spiral Alive - the manga prequel

Kiyotaka and Madoka are engaged during the events of this series. It's still in running, so I'm hoping to see more of their relationship fleshed out.

Spiral: Novels

Unfortunately, I don't have much information, other than I know on the cover of the fourth novel, Madoka and Kiyotaka are both shown on the cover. Whether they play an important role or not, I'm not sure. I do believe the novels DO cover the past events for at least Kiyotaka though.

Spiral Drama CDs

I do believe Kiyotaka and Madoka both appear in one of the Drama CDs, I will have to look up the name of it. I just know that they play poker again Ayumu in it!

The Notes of Truth

A lot of people who meet me can't figure out why I like Kiyotaka and Madoka from Spiral. Perhaps I should like Kiyotaka less, and Madoka is more deserving than that? However, as far as I can tell, this was a couple that was ultimately meant to be. I don't think Kiyotaka stole Madoka from Ayumu, as some people might think after reading the manga. There are many hints, right down to Ayumu saying it himself, that Kiyotaka truly loves Madoka. Hizumi Mizushiro tells Madoka that in the time he spent with Kiyotaka, Kiyotaka often took out a picture of Madoka and would sigh as he gazed at for a while. Ayumu confesses his love for Madoka to reassure her that his loves are the same as Kiyotaka's and vice versa, so they both must love Madoka very much.

Madoka is pleased when she realizes that Kiyotaka loves her, that she is the one he picked. She was doubtful, thinking she had only been used. Even in doubt, she was delighted that she had still been the one to be with Kiyotaka-san.

I like a more mature couple. I know I could have fallen in love with one of the teenage couples, but those are not usually my taste. I find Madoka and Kiyotaka to be a refreshing couple. They're not only older, but they also have restraint that I admire. While Madoka obviously misses her husband, she's a strong woman and goes on without him. Kiyotaka obviously misses his wife as well, but he continues to be away from her. Obviously, they're not obsessive to the point they believe their lives revolve around each other. At the same time, they definitely have affection for each other.

Yes, many of the characters in Spiral disagree that the couple should be together. Mostly, they view Madoka as a wonderful, strong woman who ended up with a trecherous and decietful man, Kiyotaka Narumi. Most of the characters show an intense dislike for Kiyotaka, who often gets labeled a bastard.
