SETTING THE CIRCLE
Back to Book of Shadows
How the circle is set is often controlled by the individual or covens preference, but some rituals do state the position of some things.  The first thing I would recommend is using a compass establish the directions.  It is common for the altar to be placed in the centre of the circle or in the east.  If it is placed in the centre, the tools etc. should be set up so that when you face the altar, you are facing east.
The usual sizes of a circle are thought to be nine feet in diameter for a coven and five for a solitary but these are not mandatory.  As the circle is entered and exited from the east, care should be taken to allow for extra space outside the circle on that side.  The circle can be marked out with anything (flowers, stones, rope).  At each direction there is a candle, usually white which are unlit.  These will be lit during erecting the temple.  Other candles used for illumination are usually positioned outside of the circle, and on the altar.

The altar itself should have a main candle, the altar candle, the colour of which will be determined by the ritual being performed.

Once the circle had been set up and worship is ready to begin the
temple is erected, after which the circle should not be left until it is cleared.
