What is Mountain View Kiwanis?

Since 1926 The Kiwanis Club of Mountain View has served our community, having celebrated its 72nd Anniversary this March. The club is part of the world wide Kiwanis International community service organization with over 8000 clubs, more that 320 thousand members in 83 nations and geographic areas. A sampling of the club's activities include purchasing, building and maintaining both Boy and Girl Scout facilities, sponsoring a Little League team, Bobby Sox and Babe Ruth teams.

IDD

The most important step in Kiwanis history was the adoption by the House of Delegates in 1994 at the New Orleans, Louisiana International Convention, of our first Worldwide Service Project, a campaign to eliminate IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDERS (IDD) from the globe. Joining UNICEF, the International Council of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, and other groups concerned with the future of our children, Kiwanis hopes virtually to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders by the year 2000.

The Mountain View Kiwanis Club Foundation will consider grant requests that meet a critical health or human care need in the cities of Mountain View. Projects must address the needs of low-income children and adolescents under the age of 18 or seniors age 60 and over. Services must have objectives that are time specific and measurable. KIWANIS NAME

The name "Kiwanis" is a coined word taken from the language of an American Indian tribe which lived in the area where Kiwanis was founded. The original phrase was "Nunc Keewanis". It means "self expression", or "to oneself be known". It was shortened and modified to become "Kiwanis".

KIWANIS MOTTO

"We Build" is the motto under which Kiwanis has advanced and become widely known since it was founded in Detroit, Michigan on January 21, 1915.

FUNDING

Funds are raised for these projects through a variety of means. Our major fund raisers each year include a golf tournament and selling our famous Polish sausage sandwiches at the Annual Mountain View Art and Wine Festival.

WHAT IS KIWANIS?

  • A Worldwide Service Organization
  • Humanitarian and Civic Projects
  • Assistance and Education to Youth
  • Assiantance and Support to Seniors
  • International Understanding
  • Community Fellowship

Kiwanians ... women and men of actions ... a worldwide organization ... who wear the K with pride.
    THE KIWANIS CLUB

The heart of Kiwanis is the club itself. Each club is composed of men and women in the community from a wide variety of occupations and professions, even retirees wishing to keep active, who have the desire to become personally involved in making their communities better places in which to live. As a group, these men and wonen achieve what individuals cannot do alone. Working together, Kiwanians voluntarily share the challenge of community improvement and leadership, assuming personal responsibility for humanitarian and civic projects that public authorities are not prepared or able to perform. These projects are predominantly local in nature. They include such activities as assisntance to youth and aging, conservation of natural resources, development of community facilities, and building international understanding and goodwill. Whatever their goals may be, Kiwanians are motivated by a common desire to serve, and to achieve an appreciation of good fellowship.
