If you don't have colored sugars at home, you can take sugar and add a drop or two of food coloring, works miracles when you are in a bind!!

Grandma Ploof's Easy Rolled out Cookies

3 Cups of Sugar
3 Cups of Sour Milk (I set out mine 2 days in advanced at room temperature to sour)
1 Cup Solid Shortening
1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
1/4 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. Baking Soda
1 tsp. Baking Powder

Add enough flour to roll out.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes, depending on oven.

You can use any type of sprinkle stuff on top, such as the sugars or candies and you can even make a variation of Powder Sugar, Milk and a little Vanilla, not a bunch or it turns the icing brown, and drizzle that on top as you bring out the cookies.  Wait about 5 minutes so all of it doesn't melt right off the cookie.

These cookies were created back in the 1940's.  With the way that the economy was and my grandparents on a short budget, Grandma didn't have the money for eggs or basic oils, so she would make these cookies for my dad and his brothers and sisters.  This really is a family favorite for the Christmas Holidays and some times, just when ever we get to thinking about family,.  Great for coffee dunking as my late Uncle Richard would always tease us kids about.
