It's Simple, Really
I'm not opposed to taxation. I realize our government
needs money to function. The amount of money they need is a whole different
issue. My main issue is with the way this money is collected. We must convert
our tax system from being an "income" tax to being a "consumption" tax.
In other words, you're taxed when you spend money instead of when you
make money.
My reasoning for a National Retail Sales Tax goes
something like this. The amount of all goods and services sold in the
United States (Gross Domestic Product) in 1994 was $5.4 trillion. The
amount of income tax gathered by personal and corporate income tax, capital
gains taxes, estate and gift taxes, and most excise taxes was $685 billion.
Now, you do the math. That's 12.7%.
Therefore if we stick a 12.7% tax on every item that
is sold in the United States the government gets it's money, we don't
fill out tax returns, and we keep all the money we earn (except for Social
Security).
Imagine if you will... no more witholding tax from
your paycheck. No more tax returns. No more itemizing. No audits. No tax
shelters. No tax evasion. No IRS.

Leave No Consumer Behind
Anyone who makes a purchase will pay taxes.
Rich people, poor people, and those in between.
Currently, those who make below a certain amount
pay no taxes. Therefore it doesn't bother them a bit to have the government
raise taxes. Under the NRST they pay the same tax on a television as does
a multi-millionaire. The rich and poor are now treated equally. The poor
can now be part of the system. 100% of the people care about taxes, not just
50%.
People who currently cheat on their taxes or just
don't pay them will now pay taxes just like the people who diligently
fill out their 1040 forms.
People who have illegal occupations (drug dealers,
etc) will now pay taxes just like those with legal occupations.
