The current military situation is aimed at the reduction of the whole military apparatus, as well as the modernization of the armaments sector. At the current time, military service is still obligatory, although conscientious objectors can opt for social service instead, but it is being phased out. In 1997, the term was reduced from twelve months to ten, and expanded to include women volunteers, although they are still excluded from fighting in war. Those born in 1985 will be the last to serve mandatory military terms. Beyond that, it will be exclusively voluntary.
