Ellen is the daughter of Lupe (Jr.) and Dina Bohay Gooday and the late Jerry James Toyekoyah. She has two brothers, Gary James Toyekoyah. She is of Choctaw descent and an enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe. Her paternal grandparents are Bernie Toyekoyah and Helen Billy Cannon of Anadarko. Her paternal great-grandmother is the late Evaline Komalty-Toyekoyah. Her maternal grandparents are the late Phil Ragan and Mamie Daugomah Bohay. She is the great-granddaughter of Steve Bohay and Pearl Botone Woodard and James Daugomah and Celia Lonewolf Auchiah. She is a direct descendant of Komalty, Poorbuffalo, I-See-O, Tanedooah, Togomote, Lone Wold, Satanta, Satank, and Dohasan.

Her great grandmother, Ida Wansey, was called Goosay-Tahn-Mah, meaning "Washington Woman," by family and friends because she accompanied her husband, Delos Knowles Lonewolf, many times to Washington DC representing the Kiowa Tribe. The names was passed down to her granddaughter, Mamie Daugomah Bohay, who desired the names be passed on to her granddaughter Ellen, who was given the name by her grandfather, Phil Raymond Dupoint. Her family includes members of the Kiowa Gourd Clan, Kiowa Black Leggings Society, Kiowa War Mothers, Victory Club, and Native American Church. Her great-grandfather, James William Daugomah, was a charter member of the National Congress of American Indians. Her grandmothers have honored his legacy by being actively involved with NCAI. Mamie Daugomah Bohay was NCAI Credentials Committee Chair, and Juanita Daugomah Ahtone served as NCAI Resolutions and Elections Committee Chair. Her uncle, Steve James Bohay is president of the Golden State Gourd Society of Southern California, which was co-founded by her grandparents Phil and Mamie Bohay. Ellen comes from a long line of distinguished and influential Kiowa people and was very proud to have been selected for this honor.

While she was Kiowa Princess, Ellen attended Anadarko High School and was a manager for the Warrior Football team. She was a member of the Cedar Creek United Methodist Church in Carnegie, OK.
