Barbara is the daughter of Joseph Pappio and Hattie Saunkeah. She was a senior at Classen High School while Kiowa Princess.

In a special contest at the 1951 American Indian Exposition, Barbara was named "Miss Oklahoma City" and attended the world premiere of the movie Jim Thorpe: All-American in Carlisle, PA with Caddo Princess and "Miss Oklahoma All-American Indian Princess" LaRue Martin and Chickasaw Princess and "Miss Indian Exposition" Beverly Johnson. She was later a candidate in the 1956 Miss Indian America pageant.
