*ASTRALED

Bay Stallion 1900 - Bred By Crabbet Arabian Stud
Mesaoud X Queen Of Sheba
*ASTRALED

*Astraled 238 was foaled in England in 1900. He was a bay stallion by
Mesaoud out of the desert-bred mare Queen of Sheba. He was bred by the Blunts and was imported to the United States in 1909 by F. Lothrop Ames of Boston, Massachusetts. He spent some time as a remount stallion and most probably has some part bred offspring. He was acquired in 1923 by W. R. Brown for his Maynesboro Stud in Berlin New Hampshire.

*Astraled sired twenty-three offspring before his importation and has only six more in this country. Two of his English born progeny were imported to this country: *Halim 282, bay stallion, out of Hilmyeh, imported by Spencer Borden and *Ramla 347, bay mare, out of
Ridaa, imported by W. R. Brown. *Halim got two foals in this country, but *Ramla did not produce after her importation. Neither horse left progeny in England. Of *Astraled's English born offspring, only twelve bred on, but their influence extends world wide, as they and their offspring were exported.

Among *Astraled's most notable offspring was the bay stallion
Razaz GSB 527 who sired the mares *Baraza 344, *Battla 345, and *Hazna 357, all imported by W. R. Brown.

*
Battla and *Baraza were both out of Ahmar daughters and thus double Queen of Sheba, and *Hazna was out of the Mesaoud daughter Hamasa and thus closely line bred to Mesaoud. All three had produce in this country.

Another of *Astraled's get who may be familiar to all is the chestnut mare
Rim GSB 581, out of Ridaa. She produced ten offspring, six of whom were imported to the United States, *Rahal 950, *Ramim 348, the ill fated *Raswan 607, *Rifla 601, *Rimal 599 and *Rimini 973. Among her other offspring to breed on were Raseem GSB 756 by Rasim. He was a noted sire who got *Indaia 813 and *Rissalma 814 among many other notables, before his sale to Russia where he was also a successful sire. Two others of her produce were Rissam GSB 883, sire of *Indian Dawn 1875 and *Nizzam 16070 and Rix 862, sire of *Crown of India 1876. Her only progeny to have no descent were *Rimal and Sharisha GSB 949.

The *Astraled daughters
Riyala GSB 491 out of Ridaa (and thus full sister to Rim) and Rokhama GSB 515 out of the Mesaoud daughter Rabla, also need little introduction. Riyala was dam of Bint Riyala by Nadir who went to Egypt and has the distinction of being dam to TWO Bint Bint Riyalas, one by Gamil Manial, the other by Garboe. Riyala also produced Rafeef GSB 693 by Nasik and Razina GSB 759 by Rasim who was the dam of Raktha, Riffal and Shamnar. Rokhama had only one foal that bred on, the mare *Rokhsa 351 by *Nasik. She is well known as the dam of Rabiyat, dam of Abu Farwa's sire Rabiyas. Selima GSB 540 out of Selma GSB 252 is the last English bred daughter that we will consider. She was dam of *Selmian by Naseem, Sardhana and Shareer by Nureddin and Star Of The Hills by *Raswan, among others. The last two were exported to Russia and may be found in Russian pedigrees. Sardhana went to Poland and brings *Astraled's blood to yet another country's studbook.

The well-known
Rustem GSB 548, out of Ridaa and full brother to Riyala and Rim was another international star. Rustem sired *Ferda 596 (dam of Ferseyn) and *Simawa 358, both imported to this country. he was also sire of Rayya, dam of *Raseyn 597 as well as Rafina, Arusa and others. Rustem went to Egypt where he sired the notable Egyptian mares Bint Nafaa El Saghira and Bint Rustem, both to be found in Straight Egyptian pedigrees, as well as others that may well be familiar.

Another *Astraled son who later went to Egypt was
Sotamm GSB 583, out of Selma GSB 252 and thus full brother to Selima. Sotamm sired Kasmeyn GSB 671 out of Kasima who went to Egypt also and became known as Kazmeen. He also sired *Numera 355 out of Nueyra, who came to this country and Naufal GSB 674 out of Narghileh, among others. In Egypt he was the sire of *Bint Serra I 897 who was among the Babson imports to this country.

Again we can see that *Astraled's influence extends world wide, encompassing not only Britain and the United States but also Poland, Russia and Egypt in the first generation and many other countries in later generations. Straight Egyptian, straight Russian and Pure Polish pedigrees all contain the blood of the English bred *Astraled who eventually wound up in the United States.

A look at *Astraled's U.S. progeny show us that five of his six offspring did not breed on strongly: Gahyr 520 out of
Guemura got only one foal, the stallion Ponce 737, who left no progeny. Kheyra 229 out of Rosa Rugosa has some descent through her son Raas while Mahmet 171, Nashi 524 and Raam 528 have no descent in modern pedigrees.

*Astraled's last-born offspring is a different story altogether. This is the stallion
Gulastra 521 out of Gulnare 278.

*Astraled sired two foals shortly after his importation, one in 1913 and one in 1915. He has no more registered purebred get until 1924, the year
Gulastra was foaled. This was *Astraled's last foal crop, and he was twenty-three years old when he sired these four horses. The only one of this group to have continued influence was Gulastra, and what an impressive influence he has had. W. R. Brown believed *Astraled to be sterile after the 1923-breeding season and, with the permission of the United States Remount, had the stallion destroyed. What a surprise those four foals must have been.
