Ishitandai MechWyrks was proud of their Urban Defense Mech series, and was not about to ignore the threat of "sniper" 'mechs. Although the long-range autocannons of snipers did little damage, they proved to be a constant annoyance to beseiged defenders. The Rainmaker, named for its ability to rain fire on distant enemies and otherwise give them a bad day, was developed to help defend key installations. Ishitandai MechWyrks opted for a slower 'mech with extra-long-range firepower over a more mobile, less-armed design. The designers decided that chasing a sniper would draw defenders away from their charge and open them to ambush. The UDM-9A Rainmaker, since it relies on a constant supply of ammuntion, was also best kept near a base, anyway. Since the Rainmaker was engineered as a slow mech, 2 medium lasers were added for close range support, on the off-chance it was over run.
