The rediscovery of many Star League technologies spawned a new
era of 'mech construction. Rediscovered materials and
construction techniques allowed for engineers to refit and
redesign and make more potent their deadly machines. New
BattleMech designs (previously quite rare due to the effort
required to design and build all-new machines) began pouring out
of factories that had been little more that repair shops a few
years before. The medium sized 'mechs, the true workhorses of the
great armies, were now able to be as powerful as machines nearly
twice their size.
The giant 'mechs, however, didn't benefit as much from this new
technology. The new engine designs, at half the weight but nearly
twice the size, allowed the assault 'mechs moderate gains in
speed. Although the new technologies were much lighter, the were
also quite bulky. Designers soon discovered that there is only so
much space in a BattleMech to cram guns, even in a 100-ton
monster. They also learned that there is a definite limit to the
amount of armor a BattleMech's infrastructure could support.
Tai-sa Keisuke Kage, leader of the DCMS 4th NSDA, embraced the
rediscovered technologies to help fulfil his team's special role
for House Kurita. The 4th NightStalkers, or Death's Angels as
they are more commonly refered to, were trained for precision
strikes into enemy forces. Although medium 'mechs offered the
necessary speed, they lacked both the firepower and endurance
needed for the Fourth's missions. With the new technologies, Kage
could outfit his regiment with heavier 'mechs. Still, there were
few assault 'mechs available to help support his forces without
becoming liabilities or very expensive distractions.
The Sentry I was designed around an Endo Steel internal
structure. Endo Steel is rarely used for such large BattleMechs
since it provides minimal weight savings. The extremely bulky
Endo Steel takes up so much internal space on a 'mech, it's
difficult to find room for the multiple weapons associated with
assault 'mechs. Also, Endo Steel is extremely expensive,
especially in huge 100-ton monsterous 'mechs.
One of the greater advantages of the Sentry I design is its
mammoth 400XL powerplant. Although made of ultra-light materials,
the engine still weighs about as much as many light 'mechs!
Coupled with massive 2-ton jump jets, the Sentry I has amazing
mobility for a BattleMech of its size.
Amazingly, the huge engine doesn't prevent the Sentry I from not
only mounting massive amounts of armor but enough firepower to
tear another 'mech in half with a single volley. While the Sentry
I may seem prone to overheating, Tai-sa Kage took advantage of
the potential weakness; he utilized Triple Strength Myomers which
perform better under extreme heat. With the TSM, not only was the
Sentry I faster, but also deadlier in physical combat. In either
case, the gigantic cooling system of the engine allows the 'mech
to fire intense barrages with its Medium Lasers without raising
the temperature of the machine.
