Once you hit lvl 50, you will have the option to hit the Alterac Valley (AV) Battle ground. Now this is majorly different from WSG or AB, in that:
1) Alliance has a better chance at winning, unless horde uses an exploit (which they usually do).
2) Average of 250 Honorable Kills (HKs) and about 50,000 honor & 3000 reputation (rep)  every day.
3) Ability to reach from neutral to friendly, then honored, revered and finally exalted with Stormpike Guards very quickly.

Advantages of doing AV.
The instances post lvl 50 are not that rewarding until you hit lvl 58. After lvl 50 there is Sunken Temple (Temple of Atal Hakkar) (52-55), then BRD (Black Rock Depths) (lvl 55-58). both instances have drops of the lvl range 48 to 53. So you really cant gear up from here.
Check :
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/factions/alterac/index.html for rewards on getting to various reputation levels with Stormpike Guards (Guardians of Alterrac Valley).
As you can see, some of the gear is rather expensive, but definitely desirable.

But thats not the end of it, you can also buy a ton of cheaper and epic quality gear when you rank up. The items are sold at SI:7 (Barracks in Old Town of Stormwind City).
Please check out :
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/honorguide.html for more information on honor and it links to an interactive flash mini site with the list of items you can obtain from there.  There are basically 3 levels, of gear: below officer rank (cape, amulet, cuffs, trinket) from the vendor outside the officers quarters, and the rest of the gear - blue and epic (2 levels, depending on rank) inside the quarters.
The interesting thing to note: the epic mount from the officers quarters requires rank of commander and riding skill of 75 and lvl 40, and its pretty much the easiest and cheapest epic mount compared to all other epic mounts. Class quests which give epic mounts require a ton of gold, and if you were to buy an epic mount, it would require a riding skill of 150, sold for a price of 800g (720g if honored) at your race's capital city.

There is only one way to win AV.... smash forward. Its all about momentum. If you can get the momentum going... you win...fast. If its a turtle... then you farm HK's ... but you can still win.
Command Helps : Dont be afraid to take charge. Most players dont know what to do next and usually follow the guy who is riding at the head. Now thats just bad news. So make sure you have a few macros ready. Right off the bat...before AV Starts, fire off the macro to yell:
"Group 4 (or any random group number) turtle Stonehearth Graveyard (SHGY), the rest of us ...Ride to Iceblood Graveyard (IBGY). Wait for 5 seconds at the gate ...so everyone is together, then ride to the flag at IBGY. DO NOT DISMOUNT BEFORE FLAG. Fight at the flag."

This usually gets things off to a good start. Alliance usually captures snowfall graveyard, and at the same time Horde is on SHGY. The group thats turtling SHGY will die, definitely, but with the guards, they cn buy a few precious minutes which can mean the difference between win and loose.
The most impotant factor in AV is... dont care if there are horde before the flag blocking the way.... just ride to the flag and fight at the flag. If you die at IBGY before snowfall is captured, then you will rezz at SPGY (Stormpike Graveyard). If so, then rush to fight at SHGY. If you die at SHGY, which you most likely will, by the time you die, snowfall GY will be alliance held. Dont fight at SH Bunker, if you die there, you rezz at SPGY. And the cycle will continue. When you die at SHGY and rezz at Snowfall GY, then just ride hard to IBGY and beyond.
But if you are lucky and horde hasnt turtled IBGY, then just kill the elites at IBGY, then rush forward to capture the tower just south of IBGY. Remember, you can take the flag of the tower without bothering to kill the guards first. And a flag capture means more honor and rep. So make sure you rush forward...and capture the flag first, then come out and kill the lvl 57 non-elite horde guards at the tower.
Then fore off the second macro..."OK Guys, dont stop here....ALL FORWARD TO FWGY." (FWGY = Frostwolf Graveyard).

It is crucial you dont stop to defend IBGY or pick on the horde players that might pass through here. Now your objective is FWGY. Rush FWGY, and capture the flag. But make sure you leave atleast 4 to 5 players there to defend FWGY. ... while others rush to Frostwolf Keep.
f you loose FWGY, before you have captured Frostwolf relief hut (FWRH), then you are turtled. Because you wont get reinforcements in time as players will have to ride all the way from IBGY. 90% chance is that now you will have to recall back to Dun Baldar to defend Stormpike Firstaid Station (SPFS) because by this time, horde will have captured SPGY. If you get turtled at SPFS...you have a 85% chance of loosing the AV. Because all you have is one GY (SPFS), and any experienced horde player will know to collect the equivalent of "storm crystals" and hand them in and summon Lokholar the ice Lord upon us. With Lokholar at the gates, and all defense at SPFS, its just a matter of minutes before you loose.
