| King's Mead is not a key butterfly site in Hertfordshire, although 24 species have been recorded. There are, however, 3 areas at King's Mead that seem to have some significance as far as breeding sites are concerned. The first area is the pathway that runs from the New River to the River Lea, underneath the flyover. Between this path and the fence to the west, is an area of rough grass that, at the appropriate time of the year, holds large numbers of Small and Large Skippers. The second and third areas are the nettle-beds by White House Sluice, one on the south bank of the New River north of the railway and the other between the railway and White House Sluice itself. Both nettle-beds hold significant colonies of Small Tortoiseshell. The Systematic Lists are included in the ANNUAL REPORTS Or alternatively, click here to access the BUTTERFLY DATABASE The list of the 24 butterfly species that have been recorded on the site is given below: |
