LIS 688D - The History of Libraries and Librarianship

This was a very interesting class where we learned about the history of libraries. The first few class periods covered up til around the 1800's with the rest focusing on the history American librarianship. I liked this class a good bit. We had to read two books on any area of library history or we could substitute 3 articles for one book. I chose to read one book and three articles. Our project for the class was to pick a library and research it's history. I picked the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC. This was a nice class that gave me a chance to learn about many areas I had no idea about.

Book Review - This is a review of the book Libraries of the Ancienct World by Lionel Casson. It's a good book if you are interested in ancient libraries.

Article Review 1 - This is a review of the article "African Bibliophiles: Books and Libraries in Medieval Timbuktu" by Brent Singleton. It gives a history of how books were kept are used in Medieval Timbuktu. I found it really interesting cause I know nothing about that area of the world.
Article Review 2 - This is a review of the article "St. Osmunds New Legacy: The Scriptorium Informs Electronic Text" by Jeanetta Drueke. It was supposed to show how the scriptorium at this one church is similar to digitizing texts and stuff like that but I didn't see a very strong connection, but I did like the information on scriptoriums.
Article Review 3 - This is a review of the article "Representation of Books and Libraries in Depictions of the Future" by Katherine Pennavaria. Ok, this is the coolest library article I have read yet. It looks at books about the future and how they portray libraries and libraians. It also looks at what librarians were saying in the past about what the future of libraries would hold. Just lots of intersting stuff. Go find a copy of it and read it.

Library History Project - This is my paper on the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library. I liked this project more than I thought I would. Belmont Abbey and it's library have a very interesting past. Plus I always like the history stuff.
