Some of my favorite books and authors, not a complete list by any means... but it's a start... (If you're not interested in Sci-Fi, then there's no real reason for you to be here... but my antique books list is below.)

Queen of Angels, Greg Bear: An incredible book by a fantastic author on the nature of crime, the definition of consciousness, the effect of technology on society in the near future. Great three-fold plot, good character development. Anything by this author I think is great, but this one really stands out as fine literature. Check out: Darwin's Radio, Eon, Blood Music.

Diamond Age, Neil Stephenson: A great fairy tale imbedded within a stark and somewhat grim view of the future. Deep and healthy morality. If it wasn't such a hard read, it would be the best kids book ever. Again, this author is one of the best and if you don't know him you are really missing out. See Also: Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon

The Long Sun Series, Gene Wolfe: If it weren't for the fact that this is some of the most incredible Sci-Fi ever, it would almost be fantasy. Very far future sorta stuff, techno/religious setting within a generation starship. Great adventure, but like all of this author's stuff, it's a heavy read. Almost prose like. Be sure to read: Book of the New Sun Series, just as good as the above...

A Fire Upon The Deep, Vernor Vinge: Great space opera, huge saga, incredible world/universe building by the author. Fantastic communal intelligence idea for alien race. The author doesn't have many other novels, and certainly nothing this good, but this story is pure F**KING gold!!

Feersum Endjinn, Ian Banks: Now this is a really strange novel, set in some unknown far future, presumably on Earth (but you never really know), unfathomable technological setting. This book is so weird, it deifies reasonable description. Whole chapters from the point of view of an illiterate man, written phonetically, thus the title.

Beggars in Spain, Nancy Kress: Powerful book relating the social effects of genetic modification of humans. Wonderful allegory for the struggle between social/economic classes. First part of a series of three books. Highly Recommended!!

There will be more coming, come back later...
