My Antique Books...

The Funny Side of Physic: or, The Mysteries of Medicine, presenting the Humorous and Serious Sides of Medical Practice. An Expose' of Medical Humbugs, Quacks, and Charlatans. By A. D. Crabtre, M.D. 1872. Covers such topics as: Humbugs, Fortune Tellers, Quacks, Generosity and Meanness (?), Medical Superstitions, Woman as Physician (it disapproves of this)...

Comte's Positive Philosophy, translated from the French by H. Martineau, Auguste Comte, 1855. Covers such vague and broad subjects as: Mathematics, Physics, Biology, "Social Physics", this book attempts to cover it all, quite a piece of work.

The Little Giant 'Cyclopedia of Ready Reference: Edition for 1891, "1,000,001 figures and facts!". Lots of funny and very dated facts from the turn of the century. Official census at the time gives U.S. population at 62,622,250. The last war in its record was the Civil War... just a neato little book.

A Manual of Gynecology, John C. Hirst, M.D., F.A.C.S. Second Edition, Revised with 195 illustrations, 1925. While not exactly antique, still quite a find. Basically a disgusting account of the state of the science of women's medicine in the early 20th century. Originally written in 1918. Many cool etchings/drawings, several black and white photos of maladies and conditions one rarely sees in the modern day and age. Not for the faint at heart.

A Healthy Body: A text book on anatomy, physiology, hygiene, alcohol and narcotics, for use in intermediate and grammar grades in public and private schools, 1891. Covers such gems like: "Where is the well?", and "How to obtain pure air".

The Poetical Works of A. Tennyson, complete in 2 volumes, I and II, 1865. Good stuff, if you like prose.

The Idea of God (as affected by modern knowledge), J. Fiske, 1892. Philosophy, similar to Comte.

Bibliographical and Critical Account of the Rarest Books in the English Language, J. Payne Collier F.S.A 1866.In four volumes, of which I only have the first, sadly.

I will add more later... come back, ok?
