My overall philosophy is that my job is to educate a horse and rider pair so that they will be able to work together in a comfortable and confident way. The key to achieving this is to make sure that both the horse and rider have enough skills to make that possible. And I believe that my part in helping this to happen is to facilitate the communication between horse and rider and to guide them using a lot of praise and a little bit of gentle correction.

I have found over the years that I have a natural intuition that guides me and I know instinctively when it it the right time to push through an issue and when it is best to back off and "pick my battles".

I am also of the mind that with some horses it takes more than one person to train a horse, similar to it taking a village to raise a child, so I have no problem sharing or passing on a horse when it is time. There are just situations when a different perspective is what's needed and I often have a trusted colleague to recommend as an option, just as I have been recommended by others.

I realistically know where the limits of my current knowledge is with different disciplines so if, and when it's time that it's the best interest for the horse, I will recommend the owner move the horse into the hands of another capable trainer for the next level of training to facilitate them reaching their own personal horsemanship goals.

I additionally consider it part of my responsibility to willingly and eagerly glean information and share knowledge with my fellow professionals and consider myself in continual education. I feel that once I think I know it all, it must be time to quit because no one knows everything and when you think you do, you must be done.

Because of my belief that continuing education is important, I will occasionally ride with another professional as a way to have another set of eyes and another realm of experience to draw on. It is often very helpful to have another perspective, especially if one is dealing with a challenging training issue. For that reason there are times when other professionals ride with me as well, to benefit from my experience. This interchange of experience and ideas is as important in horsemanship as it is in any other venue. In this way my clients get the benefits and experience of several professionals in one and I likewise get to grow as a horseperson.
