Go
into any antiques fair and I am sure that you will see at least one example of a
Sphinx piece on a jewellery stall! Some of the most recognised ones are those
that consist of rhinestone-encrusted metal "crescents" or elongated
"S-shapes". Of course, there is the oval cartouche / stamping to
search for, as well as the look and feel of the metalwork.

Some
of the best and older pieces have a golden, finely-textured metal setting, with a
soft "gold-dust" lustre. This compliments the fiery sparkle of the
high-quality Austrian or Swarovski rhinestones set within.

The
most recognised Sphinx brooches (and most sought-after) are the wreath-shaped
and what I call "U-shape" settings (see
Brooches
- Large page). These brooches are encruusted with
an abundance of rhinestones, along with metal crescents and measure roughly 2 -
2 1/2 inches across. A lovely clip-earring to match these brooches can be found
too, if you are lucky! There are some other very beautiful settings which are
seen less often on the market place; examples of these pieces will be posted on
this site to share with you.
