The Orcinus Orca, commonly known as the Killer Whale is one of the few mamals that spend their entire liives in the water. It is part of the Oceanic Dolphine Family Delphinidae. These whales are versitile preditors.
Orcas breath air through a hole on the top of their head, know as a blow hole. They can grow to be 27-33 feet long, and can wiegh up to 12,000 pounds.
Killer whales are known for their destinctive markings of black with white patches. They have an upper dorsal fin like that of a shark, which can grow up to 6 feet tall! Male orcas are much larger than females, and have a taller, more up right dorsal fin. Males live for 50-69 years, while females can live up to 90.
The whales can dive to depths of 100 ft to hunt. They can swim up to 30 miles per hour to catch prey. They come up to breth at the surface through their blow hole befor diving back under the water.
