The country of Fiji has a very unique geography. It is located in the tropics of the southern hemisphere. Fiji lies twelve to twenty one degrees south in longitude, and 176 degrees east to 178 degrees west in latitude. The country is small with only 18,272 square kilometers of land area. It consists of 322 mountainous islands, with peaks reaching 4,250 feet tall! Most islands are covered with thick rainforest, with the exceptions of large cities.

The two main islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The capital city of Suva is located on the main island of Viti Levu where three fourths or the population lives. Fiji's many islands are grouped into island chains includeing the Mamanuca group, the Yasawa group, the Lomaiviti group, and the remote Lau group.
