Hello, my name is Joo Kim. I am currently working as a first grade teacher at Charles H. Kim Elementary School in Los Angeles. I graduated from University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Psychology and Education. I received my Teaching Credential at California State University, Northridge and currently working towards a Masters in Education.

Education is the means by which a student gains the tools for a successful future. Through education, a teacher is not only teaching facts, but also teaching life skills. Education teaches students discipline, responsibility, and many other life skills. As a teacher, I hope to instill these skills in my students. I also hope to help them develop as adolescents. Education should allow students to fully understand and discover themselves, in addition to giving them the ability to survive in the real world. Education involves respecting every student's race, sex, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and religion.  Education should teach the students to think on their own, and to accept and embrace their individuality.

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to teach. Through various tutoring experiences, I have really solidified that decision in my mind. As an educator, I hope to encourage students to do their best and have then accept nothing less. I believe that education is not just about the classroom, it is about knowing your students and encouraging them to grow as individuals.

As a teacher, it is very important to build a relationship and understanding with your students. Education is not just about teaching facts, it is about developing a students knowledge about the subject and about themselves. I think it is important to challenge the students while maintaining their confidence. Through interactions with teachers and fellow students, a student will learn how to interact with others. Schools are a structured environment that will give students the groundwork to lead them into the work environment in their future.

There are many theories, such as the use of guided-discovery, which I would like to incorporate into my teaching. I feel that cooperative learning really gives the students an opportunity to communicate their ideas and learn from each other. I think through technology and manipulatives, students are given an opportunity to really explore many concepts, as apposed to just learning the procedures.

My philosophy of teaching involves a lot of patience and kindness when dealing with my students. It is important to include every student in your lessons, and teach according to different learning abilities. This patience is very necessary when teaching to students with differing abilities. Education is about a lot more than showing up every day and instructing in front of a room of students. Education is mostly about planning; there is a need to plan for each lesson and gear to the needs of every student. My philosophy of education is largely based on not just teaching the curriculum; I hope to help my students develop as adolescents, build confidence in themselves, and set them up for the future.

This technology class is one of our Master's program requirement. It is an advanced computer course that helps teachers incorporate technology into their classrooms. All work that is done in this course goes towards benefiting the teacher such as building a webpage for parents to visit, calculating grades using excel, creating power point presentations, and much much more! Through this course, I plan to develop a better technology-based learning environment for my students and be able to teach other colleagues how to incorporate various projects at my school site!
