Frequently Asked Questions
What
should I wear?
Something comfortable, casual and loose. You will get hot very fast, so
light clothing is also a good idea. You need to bring a pair of soft-soled
shoes (ghillies or ballet slippers) to wear on the dance floor.
What
are ghillies?
Ghillies are the shoes we wear while dancing. They are similar to ballet
shoes but they lace up the top of the foot and tie around the ankle. They're
not necessary to have when first starting out. Plus, they're hard to find
unless you'd like to order them by mail.
How
much do classes cost?
We only ask that you bring $5 per person for each class you attend. Every
year we have a ball in the spring which usually costs about $35 per person.

What
is the RSCDS?
The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society was established in 1923 by its
co-founders to protect and promote the standards of Scottish country dancing.
Today we are an International organisation catering to the needs of some
25,000 members.
Through the network of local branches, the Society offers opportunities
to learn and practise the country dances of Scotland. There are many classes,
at all levels, and a great variety of social dances. For members wishing
to improve their technique there are workshops and day schools as well
as the Society's own Summer School in St. Andrews, Scotland.

What
is SCD?
Scottish Country Dancing is a very social form of dancing, not only because
you get to dance with seven or so people at once instead of just with
one partner (smiles and eye contact are almost mandatory, and if you want
there is a lot of opportunity for relaxed "flirting") but also
because there are workshops, balls and social dances being held in places
all over the world. It is nice to be able to travel and join a SCD group
for a night nearly everywhere you go.
