AKC Breed Standard (Excerpt)
The Miniature Pinscher is structurally a well balanced, sturdy, compact, short-coupled, smooth-coated dog. He naturally is well groomed, proud, vigorous and alert. Characteristic traits are his hackney-like action, fearless animation, complete self-possession, and his spirited presence.
The miniature pinscher is a small compact dog, with a beautiful gate and a proud stance. The min pin looks a lot like a miniature Doberman, but is actually not! The Min pin originated in Germany and has been said to be a mix between a German pinscher and another small breed of dog or terrier. They range in size between 10-12.5 inches (25.5 to 30 cm). However, they can be larger in size do to bad breeding of dogs. They also come in several colors: black and rust, chocolate and rust, red, and blue. And usually live long healthy lives to be about 15yrs old!
Min Pins are said to be the "king of toys". There are many reasons for that saying. Not only are they beautiful dogs, they have huge personalities. Min pins are showoffs and love attention!
The Min pin is a proud dog, with a temperament to match. Even for their small size, they will happily challenge you to a full wrestling match! They are usually playful well into their years. However, the min pin is a dog that should not be spoiled. They should be raised right, with a good sense of right and wrong. With proper training, and raising the min pin can be an excellent obedience dog.
Min Pins are usually not a good dog for small children. They like to play rough which could be bad with small children. Min pins are also talkers, so if you are looking for a quiet dog they are not for you. They are, however, very good dogs for small houses or apartments. They can get enough exercise in small areas. They also shed little and require very small amounts of grooming.
Please only buy a puppy from a good breeder, not from pet stores or puppy mills. The puppies that come from these places usually have come from bad conditions, and could have bad breeding. Also please neuter your new puppy and don't breed a dog that will not pass on good traits. It is also a good idea because not spaying or neutering the dog can put them at risk for such things as cancers and other health problems!
The Miniature Pinscher, also called "Minpin" is a centuries old breed originating in Germany. Structurally well-balanced, the Minpin is sturdy and compact, smooth coated dog. Alert, intelligent, loyal and sensitive with a nature that is suggestive of a much larger dog. Born without fear and always ready for action.
Min-Pins are valued as a watchdog but also thought to be a born showmen, often used on the stage because of our intelligence and lively nature. Our size averages 10 to 14 pounds....with several different color patterns. 'A lot of dog in a little body'.....this little dog displays a few characteristics expected of a toy dog, and has the nickname "King of Toys".
Definitely NOT a "scaled-down" version of the Doberman Pinscher. The Doberman and Miniature are a separate and distinct breeds. Most MinPins are one-man, or one-woman dogs. They usually select one member as their "person" and just tolerate other members of the household. MinPins are protective....if a MinPin is resting in his own bed or on a piece of furniture which has become "HIS", he may resent intrusion and take aggressive action to protect his privacy.
