The fuel pump was "weeping" slightly so here's the new one installed.  Fairly straightforward replacement.
The DPO was right when he said the starter was "finicky".  Out with this old one and in with a newer one.  There's only two bolts holding it on and they're readily visible.  Ah, but getting a wrench on them is another story!  Finally, got them off only to find I had to remove the distributor to make room to get the starter out.  If I'd have only replaced this at the same time as the fuel pump I may have had enough room to get it out then.  I didn't want to remove the new fuel pump I just installed!
The plastic spring retainer is obviously broken.  Finally found a replacement!
