previous page in this Simple Lens Check article

I thought that perhaps when mounted on the camera body that perhaps the light would be at such a sharp angle to the film that it would have no effect , or be invisible as far as the film plane is concerned.

So I tested for this as well.

:-(

Kiev60 light entry revealed

With the back open and seeing what the film would see , there is no doubt that un-metered light is entering the body through these lens openings.
It is the same situation both on the Volna and the Arsat 80mm 's.

So what can you do about this ???

Sadly , not much at all.
It is simply a big design flaw that is not easily overcome.
Some say  , ¨remove the lever and put tape over the hole¨ , but this is not the cure at all.
There is still a large quantity of light entering the focus scale opening that can not be ignored.

The only options are  ,

1. Toss the lense in the trash.
2. Don't focus on objects less than 90cm for the Volna and 100cm for the Arsat.

At distances greater than this the light can not enter the body as the inner lens elements have now covered the opening in the rear of the lens.

So there we have a brief introduction of lens faults.

One thing to remember is that in the case of Kiev lenses , you will rarely get a ¨perfect¨ lens.
All will have one or more fault as exposed in these few pages.

A decision on your part will have to be made as to where to draw the line of what is good and not good enough.
This will be influenced to a large degree on how much money you wish to spend on a lense , and if you can be bothered getting repairs done to it.

Good shooting......
