| b. Kapila Marvin Patinayake. January 2nd, 1985. Harlesden, Middlesex, England. Who would have thought that as a youth, small joys from falling asleep to Cheek to Cheek (an 80's love song compilation), to litening to Micheal Jackson albums on my dad's huge headphones, and strumming my mum's old guitar, whilst singing "In the Ghetto" by Elvis Presley to family road trips accompanied by tapes of motown artists were early signs of what was to come. At the age of 7, we moved out of Harlesden to a little town called Harrow. At 9, my dad moved to Italy for work. The next 6 years was to be a big growing curve. In 1994, my cousin, Johann, got me into rock music, which, at the time, was dominated by the whole grunge scene. At the same time, he made me tapes of underground bands (Meat puppets-Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth-Jesus Lizard) and other infamous rock bands. At 11, I got my first guitar as a christmas present. I tought myself for a year, with a lot of help from my uncle, who is an amazing musician and influence. At 12, I started having classical lessons from Anthony Faconti, who was in the band Solow - at the time, a big influence on me, and also, my brother and Mark, who we'd met via mutual friends. The 3 of us jammed on and off, never taking anything seriously. Our motives have always been rooted in having fun. We met and made bands with many other people along the way (one of which being Pseudo - an early incarnation of the Harrow band Overlook. The other being the Hoax, a 5 piece, which included 2 others, Thom and Vishal, who got us briefly into historical/influencial bands, such as Black Sabbath and the Sex Pistols). While being in that band, i wasn't taken very seriously (due to young age), and as a result, became a lot stronger, more skillful, and very versatile. It has always been the 3 of us with different bassists, most recently being Will Wichanski of fellow Harrowers, Born Blind. Another big influence on me was Max Brusci, an Italian friend of my dad's, who died in October of 1999. He tought me a lot of what i know in playing my instrument. Shortly afterwards, my cousin Johann died in June of 2000. All this has made my songwriting a lot more meaningful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Mum, Dad, Johann (R.I.P), my Uncle POITHI(hehe!) Anthony, and Max (R.I.P) who have all helped shape me in one way or another. Also, Nalin and Mark for being the first and remaining students in my musical nursery. HIRAN IS THE DON!!!! |
