KHVFD, along with CCFR units E10, R10, R23 and Battalion 1, attended Air Transport Landing Zone training. Life Flight 2, flew down from the Green Cove Springs area to instruct the class. Life Flight 2 has been in service in the Clay County area less than a year. The crew for the helicopter consisted of ( Pilot ) Mike Lapointe, ( Medics ) Tres Oliver and Jairo Herrera, ( Instructor ) Heath Schmidt with Heath being from the Keyston Heights area and currently residing here. The class taught landing zone safety (how to approach the air craft after it has landed). Attendance for the class was good. KHVFD would like to extend a big thanks to all those who attended and to LF2 for teaching the class.

The new recruits and other probationary members finished session II of III. They performed engine company and hose evolutions and covered response policies, hand tools and radio operations. All participants gained hands-on experience and got a little wet. Thanks go to everyone for having a good attitude towards training, the officers and members who asssisted in the training class, and Mr. Miller for some more good food. We have one more session to go.

CCFR Staff as well as E10 and KHVFD conducted an Acceptance Test of the newly constructed NFPA compliant 120,000-gallon water storage facility located at the Keystone Airport. The fire protection system constructed by Evans Fire Protection of Jacksonville, Florida, provides protection to existing buildings as well as one additional T-Hanger to be constructed in the future. This expandable system (a self-filling, draft type through a fire hydrant centrally located in the complex of T-Hangers) is a positive step toward securing fire protection within the Airpark complex. This project was made possible only by a highly motivated Airpark committee dedicated to its customers' safety.

New Recruit Class Starts with Success
With several new applications for membership being received, the department officers decided to initiate an idea they had been planning. And with four members being voted in on probation and one late application, a class was planned. With many hours of planning put into this new program, it went off without a hitch. The new recruits finished their first session and are excited to return. Gear was issued and department history and meaning were explained. Thanks to President Jeff Miller for the lunch and valuable training. And thanks to all the officers and members who assisted in the class. We hope the next two sessions will be like the first.

KHVFD along with E10, St23, R75 and DOF, responded to a wild fire involving a lake bed. Upon arrival, E10 extended pre-connected lines to rapidly control the growth of the fire, as brush trucks worked the perimeter. The Division of Forestry plowed a line around the fire. Twelve thousand gallons of water from Tankers 105 and 238 was used to darken the fire. Over 12,000 gallons were pumped through the sprinkler system from a nearby pond to assist with overhaul. The scene was left in the care of the Division of Forestry, with the scene’s being checked on a daily basis for rekindle due to the peat involved.

KHVFD and CCFR extend our condolences to the family of Mike Benson and his Melrose VFD family during this difficult time after his passing.  Mike Benson was a long-time member of the MVFD.  He was a valuable family man, as well as a value to the community in which he lived, as was obvious by his giving nature.  Our hearts and prayers go out.
