An Enigma

I found you there at dusk,
Staring into the silence
Your eyes glistened with tears
But you'd never let them fall
Whereas I would let them fall and dry on my cheek
Just to feel the wind blow across them
But not you; I placed my hand on your shoulder
"Do not worry," I said. You only replied, "I must."
And then I knew that I would never understand you
For I was a child born of light,
And you were steeped in darkness
Which is not to say that I was always happy
Or you were always sad
But my moods were light and changeable
When I laughed it was the twinkling of a million silver bells in the breeze
When you laughed it was with a smile that spread across your face
Then vanished before one could truly say they'd seen it
When I angered it was with a pout that faded as soon as its purpose was served
But you angered with a brooding intensity that could last for several days
Still I loved you
My love could transcend all this,
But my understanding never could
You were the bright ring on the carousel
The ring I reached for as I whirled past
But never got to hold.
