Road Trip Tales

Dear Nobles & Ladies,

Well the Cycle Escort has been busy so far and having a great year, it was time to plan our yearly Renegade Rendezvous. Rodney & Scott have done a wonderful job and it’s time to return to the beautiful scenes of Colorado. A group of 16 members and 3 guests meet at the Phillips 66 station around 6:30 AM., at Boys Ranch road ready to go. Our first nights stay was scheduled in Cripple Creek. The trip up was very pleasant and we stopped at the Harley Davidson Store in Pueblo, had lunch, shopped and were on our way. On our way to Cripple Creek several broke away from the pack to site see and visit the Royal Gorge. If you have never seen it before it’s a magnificent site. This trip came with a few problems, the next morning Gary Smith had a crack in his rear break line and had to stay behind for repairs and met up with us later.

After a late start we headed for our next night’s stay at Glenwood Springs, traveling through Leadville and Vail on the way. C.B. Lowey’s bike started leaking a little oil and needed repairs in Glenwood. The next day all is well and we headed for Alamosa. On the way we stopped in Aspen for lunch and site seeing. Back on the road we headed for Independence Pass, and at the top the rain had started. After suiting up in rain gear, Scott Campbell’s bike would not start and had to be charged by jumper cables periodically caused by a bad stator, but made it to Alamosa. The food and stay was good in Alamosa.

The next morning Rodney & Scott had to be in Red River early to judge the Chili Cook off, so the group split up and the other half took a day trip. We left Alamosa and headed over Wolf Creek Pass, then over to Pagosa Springs, and on into Red River. From Wolf Creek Pass all the way to Red River the rain was very heavy. As we reached the town of Ouesta, there was a funeral position so we pulled over and stopped. Richard Norton slipped on the slick payment as he was stopping; lost his balance and the bike fell over. Richard was sore but was able to continue with some damage to his bike. The evening in Red River the food was good, the Bands sounded great and we had a lot of fun.

The next morning it’s up and back to Amarillo. We were again drenched by the rain. As we turned onto Boys Ranch road, Mike Langley, Scott Campbell nephew slipped on the wet pavement. Mike was not injured, but his bike sustained some heavy damage. We all made it home do some problems and misfortunes but arrived safe and sound. We are all ready for next year and another adventure. Remember all we do is for the children and it takes all of us.
