Poodles in Art
Poodles by Goya
Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes is often called the First Painter of the Spanish Mind. Many of his portraits feature  carefully groomed Poodles, which are sometimes known in Spain as Perros de Lana--literally, Dogs of Wool.
Right:   The Duchess of Alba, 1795. His close friend & probable mistress, Goya was fascinated by the Duchess & painted her often. At her side is a white Poodle.

Below: Detail. Note the shaved legs & the placement of the red bow.
Left: Maria Teresa de Borbon y Vallabriga, Countess of Chinchon 1783

Below: Detail. The coat is trimmed, and the Poodle face is clearly visible.

Left: Francisco Xavier Pedro  1803.  Goya's portrait of his only surviving son was painted when  Xavier was 19.

Below:  Detail.  The crouching Poodle, face & legs clipped, stays at Xavier's side.
