| Poodles in Art | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Poodles In Art --- You see them everywhere--galloping alongside horses, playing at the feet of ladies, curled before the fire. Dogs have been a staple in art for almost as long as art has existed. And from the earliest times, the shaggy, curly-coated dogs have been depicted as well. The question, of course, is not so much the presence of these dogs as the point at which they become Poodles that interests us here. There are many images of Poodles that will, unfortunately, not be seen here. The primary reasons are simply that the original image is either too indistinct or too small to scan well. Our goal is to use those images that clearly represent Poodles as they looked in the past. An amazing array of artists are represented here: Albrect Durer, Heironymous Bosch, Lucas Cranach and many more depicted Poodles in their works. Durer, in particular, renders the same dog so often that the possibility exists that it may have been one he knew well, perhaps even owned. One of the more interesting aspects of Poodle history is the debate over when the various sizes arose. I had assumed that the large Standard was developed first, with the Miniature & Toy following. However, the pictorial evidence does not support this. Instead, it suggests that the Standard and Miniature were developed concurrently. Certainly both were known by 1350, and possibly even earleir. Toys are shown by the 16th century, far earlier than expected. Obviously the desired traits which made these dogs Poodles became fixed very early. |
