| On the very edge of the Solar System there is a great cloud of comets. Comets are balls of dust and frozen gas which orbit the Sun. Sometimes the gravity of a star beyond the Solar System tugs at the orbit of a comet, and pushes it off course. It may then swing in towards the Sun. As it approaches the Sun, the frozen gases heat up. A long tail of gas and dust trails across the sky. This can often be seen from Earth. The comet then circles the Sun and heads back towards the outer planets. |
