| What is Astronomy ? |
| From the earliest times, humans have been fascinated by the Sun and Moon, and the stars and planets. It took scientists many hundreds of years to begin to understand how the planets and stars move through space. They invented telescopes to map the night sky. In the end, they invented equipment to send into space by itself to study the planets and stars. The scientific study of space and all it contains is called ASTRONOMY. |
| The first stargazers |
| Long ago, people worshipped the Sun and the Moon. Priests realized that they needed to study the sky in order to work out the best time to sow crops. Stonehenge may have been used for studying the angle of sunrise about 4000 years ago. The Circles of Stonehenge still stand in southern England. |
