View across Limekiln Bay

The view from this veranda is unparalleled on the New Brunswick coastline. No other location has so many high, small islands backed by breathtaking sunsets. From here you can watch the boat traffic in and out of Blacks Harbour and the incessant work of the salmon farmers as they feed their salmon 365 days a year. The finest paddling to be found in the Fundy Isles starts right here.

In July the bay is frequently "as still as a mill pond", to quote Uncle Gene. There is no break, however, from the constant ebb and flow of the tide.

From this porch you can watch adolescent eagles learning to fish and be chased by arrogant gulls. You can also watch harbour seals cautiously eying the salmon cages and hear the shots of the salmon farmers scaring them away. One unfortunate victim washed up on the beach last winter providing a smorgasbord for the rock crabs and eagles.

I can just walk my kayak down the beach to the water in the morning and quietly slip off between the salmon cages and disappear among the many rugged islands in the foreground. My kids run across the beach to greet me on my return, show me all of their treasures that they have found and to help carry all my stuff up to the cottage.

Kayaking doesn't get any better than this.
