| So, how long do you think people have had the idea to take specific care of their fingernails and even go so far as to decorate them? You'd be surprised how long! The history of nail care dates back to the 1800's. Although no where near as sophistocated as products are today, the people who lived in that far in the past did know that they could experiment with their nails. They knew that they obviously grew constantly, and they could be cut without any pain. That was pretty much the beginning...and they went from there! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Way back in 1800, people even had their fingernails on their minds. They were still very simple, but they knew that they could take care of the nails because as I mentioned before, it was painless to shape and style them. The first sign of nail care was as this time, the almond shaped tips. This was done by buffing the nail with a chamois cloth, made of goat hides. It was rough, and was the equivalent to a nail file. Sometimes, people would even tint their fingernails with a colored oil (primarily red), which was in come cases scented. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It's always nice to take care of your nails. But who knew people have been doing it for over 200 years? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Way back in the 1800's people were even taking care of their fingernails. They basically were looking for rounded tips, and filing them down with a cloth made of goat skin. Pretty rustic huh? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Then in 1830, a European foot doctor created another nail care tool. Before this, there were the existing metal tools that were not very sophisticated. His tool was a wooden stick that pushed back the cuticles. Also before this invention, the tools that were available along with the metal ones were acid and scissors. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is an example of a more modern orange stick, used to push back cuticles. In 1830 when they were first invented, they weould me made of all wood, and not very sophistocated. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The first attempt to bring the orange stick method to the United States was in 1892. Previously, nail care was very limited, and not specific to gender. When this method was brought to the US, it was focused primarily on women. Also at this time salons began to help women of all different incomes. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| These are all metal nail files. They have ridges along the face of the metal to basically file down rough edges of the nail. Of course, like the orange stick, when they were first created they were much more rustic and did not have grips on them like these do! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1910 the first real emery board (or nail file) was created. The company was called Flowery Manicure Products, which was located in New York City. They made the older metal nail files, but created the emery board. It was made of a garnet abrasive on a wooden stick. (The History of Nail Care). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1900 nail care progressed dramatically. First of all, nail files were created. They were metal, along with the small metal scissors that were used to cut the nails. A type of nail polish, back then called a nail varnish, was created to create a glossy look. It also wore off in less than a day, along with the tinted creams and other products that could be applied to the nails for shine. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1914 a women named Anna Kindred created a patent for her rustic type of nail polish or gloss. It protected the fingernails from getting discolored for people who work with chemicals that could potentially harm the fingernails. It was basically a shield to protect the fingernails. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
