The Nepean High School Key Club's 05/06 year was a great success. Under the leadership of our dedicated executives; Tessa McNicol, Annie Aubert, and Jessica Aston; also with the guidance of our devoted Kiwanis and faculty advisors; Buck Madden, Doug McGregor, Seniora Coulombe and Tracey Friendship; we were able to make the year both fun and productive.
Our first fundraiser was for Make Poverty History. Our campaign lasted two weeks during which we sold the signature white bracelets, provided information on world poverty, and collected signatures for the Make Poverty History Petition. To further promote our campaign we wore handmade Make Poverty History t-shirts and played excerpts from the 2005 Live 8 Concerts. Over 400$ was raised and an excess of 500 signatures were collected for the petition.
Our next big project was Adopt a Child, an annual fundraiser that attempts to continue to provide food, shelter, and education for nine children in Uganda. Our two week fundraiser raised $1700, making us successful in readopting our nine children. For the holiday season we volunteered at the Parkinsons Society Holiday Dinner. Our volunteers, dressed as reindeers and Santas helpers, thoroughly enjoyed serving food and singing carols. After a short break for exams we braved the fringed winter weather to assist in the co-ordination of Dovercourts Annual Winter Carnival. As well as running various outdoor activities we sold hot chocolate to the public. Despite electrical difficulties we raised just over $150.
Next came our largest event of the year, our annual spaghetti dinner. With the help of four dedicated subcommittees, volunteers, and local businesses we were able to pull the event together in just under a month. The event took place on Thursday March 2nd, over 300 people came to enjoy the fresh pasta, homemade sauce, garlic bread, salad, fabulous desserts and unlimited starbucks coffee. More importantly they came to support the Canadian cancer society, listen to moving guest speakers, including Jackie Holtzman, cancer survivor and former mayor of Ottawa, and lets not forget the incredible door prizes and entertainers. The event raised $1600 for the Canadian cancer society. Nepean High school played a role in planning the entertainment for the 2006 eastern Canada district key club convention; in addition nine of our key clubbers attended the convention.
Two weeks later our key club ran a World Vision 30 hour famine. Over 55 student started the famine at nine am Friday April 21st, stayed overnight at the school and finished the famine at three pm the next day. The famine was an important experience that opened the eyes of all participants to the severity of hunger in impoverished countries. Most importantly the event rose over $6000 for world vision and this time landed us in the Citizen.
