In 2285 the first Excelsior class ship, the USS Excelsior, was commisioned to be the testbed for a new transwarp system. Almost 2 years later in 2287 the Federation deemed the project unsuccesful and the Excelsior faced decommisioning.
After a re-evaluation it was determined that the Excelsior, though not what expected, was still one of the most advanced ships of the time. They underwent a redesign to conform to the standard systems and replaced the Constitutions as the flag ship of the Federation. |
