Tagliaferro Family
History
Motto 'Forte et Firmus'
The "TAGLIAFERRO" family of Malta
descend from the Parma branch
of the "TAGLIAFERRI" of Parma
and Genoa, Italy.
Their genealogy is found in the works of Crescenzio and Aralci. ANTONIO
TAGLIAFERRI of Parma (circa
1477) aided the Princess of Pallavicinis, Cantelli of Parma and Scolti of
Piacenza who settled in Genoa.
ANTONIO had a child:- GABRIELE TAGLIAFERRI (1502) a poet and founded a
fencing school in Viterbo.
The Tagliaferro family were originally from ( Parma
and ? ) Genoa, Italy
and were a family of very successful traders throughout the Mediterranean
and the Black sea.
Biagio Tagliaferro established a base in Malta
and built up a large fleet of ships trading mostly in grain from the Black
sea ports. (Biagio Tagliaferro was buried at St.Dominic's
Church in Valletta.)
Several other members of the family in Malta,
Francesco and Stefano settled in Malta
as well.
In the Petition to the Holy See by the Bishop of Malta on behalf of
Girolamo Tagliaferro , mention is made up of his two brothers who in 1840
were in Beredianska as Consuls for Rome
and they worked hard to establish the Catholic Religion Dispute, though
with great opposition from the Russian Government. For this they were both
created Counts by Pope Gregory XVI ( Archivo Segreto Vaticano)
The title presented to Girolamo Tagliaferro, a Banker (founder of the
Tagliaferro Bank that later became known as the National Bank of Malta),
Merchant and a Philanthropist on the year 15th of April 1892 by Pope Leo
XIII. The title remains with all his descendants in male primo genial line
born in lawful wedlock and not separated from the catholic religion.
Girolamo financed many works of charity such as the buildings of two
churches (Valletta and Sliema)
and also the Fra Diego Institute in Humrun.
Chev Giacomo Tagliaferro CMG was the brother of Girolamo who was created
the title of Count.
Girolamo Tagliaferro was succeeded by his only surviving son, Alfredo who
died unmarried in 1913.
Alfredo Tagliaferro's sister,Olga married Alfred Sant Fournier, the 5th Count Fournier .
