Lichfield – a great place to be! You’ll find
us at the heart of southern Staffordshire, surrounded by beautiful
countryside, but just a stone’s throw from Birmingham
or Derby and easy travelling
distance from two international airports, the National Exhibition Centre,
the Belfry Golf Course, the new National Forest and the Peak District.
Although an historic city, Lichfield is alive
throughout the summer with festivals and events, both indoor and outdoor.
A diverse and fascinating past has laid the foundations for Lichfield
District. Throughout history settlers have made their mark on Lichfield
from the buildings they created , to the wars they fought and the roads
they laid. Features from across the centuries are still evident, including
Roman roads (Ryneild Street
- A38 or Watling Street
- A5). The village of Wall
is famous for being a military staging post and still has roman remains.
St. Chade, the Patron Saint of Mercia was buried here and many pilgrims
visited his Shrine.
Bishops later made Lichfield their home, fortifying
the Close surrounding the Cathedral and setting out the streets in a medieval
grid pattern. The Civil War later raged in the district, with the city of Lichfield
having three sieges and the Cathedral suffering much damage.
There are many Georgian buildings in the city and well known residents from
the 18th century include: Dr Samuel Johnson, Erasmus Darwin David Garrick
and Anna Seward. Today, the city is lively with many festivals throughout
the year and the new Lichfield Garrick continues David Garrick's support
for theatre and the arts.
