| Skipjack and his crew decided to move the gold to a safer place. Over the next 6 days they moved thier gold several miles down river. They would pile so much gold on the Redken that it barily would float. At times, several crewmen had to bail the water from of her stomach. With the gold safe they prepared themselves for battle. They removed the 6 cannons from the Redken and placed them on the other side of the river. Along with all the gunpowder and cannon balls they could find. 12 crewmen were stationed at those sites. Which were spaced about 100 yards from each other. Back on the other shore, Skipjack had an idea. He had the rest of his crew carry as much mud from the river as they could carry. With the sun's help in drying and hardning the mud. They made the mud look like the gold. Up close you could definatly tell it wasn't the gold. But Skipjack hoped that Cornstalk wouldn't be close enough to notice. With 7 days gone. Skipjack new the time was growing near. He had some of his crew climb to the top of the tallest trees to watch for Cornstalk. The 8th day they created a large sling using old fishing nets and all the ropes they could find. Large enough to hold the entire "gold" pile. Using some of the trees that hung out over the river, they placed the gold into the sling and hoisted it 20 feet above the water. The 9th day they created scarecrows of themselves to place around the area. In such away that they appeared to have been robbed and murdered. Hoping that Cornstalk would notice the gold dangling over the river. Way before they realized they were looking at scarecrows. That night they worked to hide themselves as best as possible to surprise Cornstalk. Sometime in the early morning hours a yell was heard making them fully aware of the approaching army. Skipjacks heart started beating hard enough he worried Cornstalk would hear it. ------------------------------------------ Cornstalk and his army of 100 men, met up with his brothers Corncob and Cornbeefhash just after midnight on the 10th day. The brothers had brought their small army of 25, including themselves, to rightfully claim their gold. They had arranged to meet about a mile from the site as to not alarm the Redken's crew. Cornstalk sent Cornbread out to check the area and report back to him as soon as possible. Meanwhile Cornstalk and his brothers would try to create a plan of attack. After a few hours Cornbread returned. Cornstalk noticed a wicked smile had formed across his sons face."They are all dead!" said Cornbread. "Dead?" "How could that be?" asked Cornstalk. "They appear to have been murdered in their sleep. The idiots have the gold hanging from a tree above the river." laughed Cornbread. This confused Cornstalk "Well, if someone murdered them, then why didn't they take the gold?". Nobody could give him an answer. So they set out to find out for themselves. Cornbread had a wierd feeling come down on him. As if they were being watched. With his expert hunting skills he slipped off to find out what was watching. Crawling close to the site, Cornbread suddenly heard an awful scream come from above him. Before he could look up he felt a sharp blow to his skull. Holding his hands up to his face he could feel the warm oozing fluid flowing from his head. The salty taste touching his lips. Opening his blood filled eyes he could barily make out the shape of a man just as a razor sharp sword removed his sight forever. Hearing the screams, Cornstalk suddenly felt sick to his stomach. Somehow knowing Cornbread was gone,he looked at his brothers with tears in his eyes. Without saying a word they moved on to the site. With pure anger in his heart Cornstalk vowed to kill Skipjack as slowly and painfully possible. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shortly after the screams were heard,Skipjack could see Cornstalk and his army coming at them thru the early morning dawn. With a thunderous yell Cornstalk came running into the camp. Followed by his army, they began stabbing and slashing at the bodies on the ground.Skipjack waited until it was time. Cornstalk could see his gold hanging from the huge tree and ran straight for it. While the army cut and slashed at the bodies,Cornstalk tried to figure out how to get his gold. From behind a shot was fired and Cornstalk's gold plunged into the river. From across the river the cannons bellowed out their mighty boom. With cannon balls landind all around Cornstalks army he sent his men into the river to retrieve the gold. Oh'course the gold being made of mud, the water quickly dissolved Cornstalks fortune. His army searched frantically to find it on the rivers bottom. Skipjack and crew came running up from behind and began firing their weapons. Mass confusion set in quick with Cornstalk. Bodies fell all around Cornstalk. The smell of death filled the air. Cornstalk continued to send his army into the cool water after his gold while the rest fought with Redkens crew. Those searching for the gold came up for their last gasp of air with bullets punching thru their skulls. Those fighting on the shore were no match for Skipjacks weapons. Cornstalk realized they had been fooled and ordered his army to retreat. With nowhere to go but into the river they dove in as fast as possible. Skipjack and crew ran up as they dove in and continued firing. Cutting those down who had not made it to the water. Cornstalk, being a great swimmer, swam straight down searching for his gold. Finding nothing more then a large mound of mud. He quickly swam with the current to safety down river. Needing air he surfaced to find he was well down river from the action. Watching in horror he saw his army's lifeless bodies floating by. A few were still moving he would pull them over to the shore. Corncob came swimming up dragging his brothers body. Cornbeefhash had taken a bullet to his right temple, killing him before his head would make contact with the water. Outraged,Cornstalk round up what was left of his army. What was at one time an army of 100 + it was now down to 15. They headed inland to regroup and doctor their wounds. |
