The Faust class when compared on merit of size could fall into the corvette class, however it is designed with a different mission in mind. The Faust was a new type of ship dubbed the Patrol Combat craft, or PatCom for short. The PatCom is meant as a system defense craft and long range patrol vessel for fleets and battlegroups. In this role the L-F battery often found on a Corvette is deemed unnecessary, making the Faust far more cost effective then other warships of its size.
The Faust is easily amoung the fastest warships ever produced, capable of sustained acceleration of 3 G's with bursts in excess of 4 possible. The Armor of the Faust is also exceptional for its size, greater then either the Zeck or Inazuma corvettes. The weaponry of the Faust also surpasses what could be found on even the well known Fox class. 24 Fighters back up the already formidable Faust.
The end result is an exceptionally capable vessel, faster and better armed then any vessel of its size at a cheaper price then its nearest price. The PatCom has become extremely popular across the Inner Sphere and the plans have been sold to several designers to keep up with demand.
The only complaint voiced to date with the Faust is in its lack of a Lithium Fusion battery reduces its effectiveness as a pre-entry scout for battlegroups. A special model Faust, dubbed the J-Faust, has been developed for this position. Trading out the trio of nose mounted NL35 lasers allowed for the weight necessary to install a L-F Battery while not seriously hindering the capabilities of the Faust. However this model is not highly circulated as it is roughly 3.5 times the cost of the standard Faust.
