By the 4th Succession War Highlanders were all but extinct in the Inner Sphere, lost to years of war and losses of technology. However finding one was not unheard of, as Timothy Wallace discovered in 3021. Wallace's family had served with the Northwind Highlanders since its rebirth, that is until his grandfather left them for a chance to return to his ancestral home. Since that time the family lived peacefully on Northwind. It was there, buried beneath an ancient landfall that young Timothy disovered a 300 year buried Highlander, still bearing its regimental crests. The discovered mech sparked in him a long buried desire to see combat. It took nearly a year to unearth the mech by hand but only minor maintance was necessary after that. It appeared that the mech had been caught in a landslide enroute to a location and had been abandoned. Wallace contacted multipul stable owners on Solaris for funding, finally recieving it from Micheal Johnson of the Dragon's Teeth stable. He payed to have the highlander transported to Solaris, and to replace the unrecognizable autocannon type construct in the right arm. Over the years the mech was updated into its final form, replacing the SRM6 with a sextuplet of small lasers and the massive but problematic AC/20 with the longer range AC/10. Wallace used the mech through his tenor in the Dragon's Teeth stable and into a mercenary career of the same name. The mech served him well until 3039. Wallace had defeated an opponent mechwarrior, who crawled fromhis destroyed machine and begged for help with his injuries. Wallace kindly abandoned his machine to provide aid and was shot dead on site. The enemy mercenary escaped from the rest of the lance but the Widowmaker and Wallace were recovered. It seemed that the mech would never be used again as his only child was only 6. However during a sneak attack upon the nearly undefended rear base Timothy's widow, Marianne, took over the massive Highlander and used it to defend the dependants of the Dragon's Teeth. She showed as much skill with the mech as her late husband and afterwards permanently piloted the now renamed 'Wallace's Widow' but under special circumstance missions only. Marianne Wallace couldn't stand the idea of doing to another what had been done to her and approached her Colonel about starting a new company. This company was composed entirely of Dispossessed mechwarriors who had been stripped of their mechs in various outfits for moral conflicts. The new company works strictly garrison duty and only on civilian areas, trying to protect those who can not protect themselves. In this way Marianne feels that her husbands legacy can live on, his final act of kindness having not been a waste. Capabilities The 'Widowmaker' has many of the typical attributes of a Highlander. The same speed and the jumpjets, so rare on an assault mech of its size. However the weapons configuration is slightly different then the norm. The AC/20 commonly used on this model was stripped out in favor of a longer range AC/10. The extra weight gained was used primarily to upgrade the armor to its maximum, providing ample protection. The highly ammo ineffeciant SRM6 was also stipped out, replaced with a more powerful, but shorter ranger, sextuplet of small lasers. The array is designed to surprise most opponents who would not expect to find such a setup in a single arm. Variants 'Wallace's Widow' has two varients built over time. In 3051 the 'Widow' was upgraded to Star League standards for Marianne who payed for a second upgrade in 3055, having Wolf's Dragoons personally rebuild the mech from the ground up using entirely Clan tech before giving it to her son, Jerrard. |
