In 3074, after the Snow Raven memory core's contents were distributed to the various Star League shipyards, the nascent SLDF Naval Command offered a shipbuilding contract for the shipyard whose cruiser-class design was judged most suitable to serve as the SLDF's primary Warship-of-the-Line. After about two years, the finalists were drawn down to two designs, both from Kathil's Lightspeed Naval Design Group, at the time affiliated with but not a part of the McKenna Shipyards: the Kearsarge Class Heavy Cruiser and the Victory Class Battlecruiser. Funds were allocated for the construction of one of each design; the SLS Victory at Ross 248, and the SLS Kearsarge at Kathil. The two prototype cruisers served well in the Blakist War and in the beginnings of Operation Silver Spear. After the recapture of Terra, the decision was made to put the smaller and cheaper Kearsarge into full production, and to put the Victory on limited production once the gains from Silver Spear had been consolidated. The Second Clan War threw that plan out of whack, and both designs were put into full production, regardless of the cost. |
