With the onset of the second Clan war in 3075 the Dragon's Teeth chose to create a new warship, one capable of tackling the threat of the Clan's superior warships. It took 3 years of design from 4 seperate design teams to complete and another 5 for the first vessel of the class to slip its moorings.
Built at the Iron Wings rarely used Outreach shipyard (a pair of drydocks 3 planets out from Outreach, used to repair warships and dropships under the watchful eyes of the Dragoons), the new ship was amoung the most advanced ever to serve in the Inner Sphere, using every new technology available to it to combat the superior Clan ships. The new ship, which was christined the Baldur after the honorable warrior god of Tuetonic myth, fit the tactics of the Dragon's Teeth admirably. At over one million metric tons, over 75% of its mass is devoted to massive engines, both KF and standard drive. These make the massive ship as fast as Frigates and Corvettes in other militaries. An astounding amount of armor makes the Baldur as durable as the Clan Nightlord vessel, while a powerful array of weapons provides maximum damage potential.
Point defense is provided by an array of Gauss Rifles, ER PPC's, Pulse Lasers, and 63 aerospace fighters (following the standard Dragon's Teeth setup of 7 fighters to a lance). Capital weapons follow standard practices from Iron Wings Naval, focusing on the destructive NAC/30 and powerful Heavy NPPC for the prodominent firepower. A single Heavy Gauss Cannon provides a powerful extended range punch to disable enemy vessels, while 12 Barracuda launchers provide accurate power against warships and fighters both.
The Baldur launched from its dock May 2nd, 3084 with full compliment and immediately moved to engage Jade Falcon in their assault on the Confederation and Free World's League. Through out the length of the war the Baldur fought from battle to battle earning fame for its astounding victories, and even survived the massacre over Terra. To this day the Baldur still serves as flagship for the Dragon's Teeth. A second Baldur class, the Heifner, launched in 3092, early enough to fight in the waning years of the war, sadly it was crippled over Terra and is still undergoing repairs.
After the war, the Baldur design has gone onto the open market where it is much prized. However its one fault is its extreme expense. Currently a cheaper model is in the design and should enter production within a few years.
