| People try to make a mystery out of Hotaru, whereas she is one of the most straightforward of the senshi. Her story is tragic: mother dead, left with a father who agreed to becoming evil to save her life. She was possessed by Mistress Nine, as that evil being saw the power to be gained from the physical body of the young Senshi of Destruction. She was shunned at school because of the power that should have made her popular: she had the ability to physically help others by healing their wounds. To offset her incredible power, though, she was given the incarnation of a very small, very sickly girl who is physically extraordinarily weak. She had no friends until Rini took her to heart in a moment of kindness, and the two girls became the closest of friends. Once the outers learned of what she really was and she was freed of possession, they took her in to be their own daughter. And for the record, no, Hotaru is not a goth. She is so pale because she is so sickly, and as to the black, it is generally considered to be a color that represents power, and was used thus to show that she is (arguably) the strongest of the senshi.
