Dawson's Creek was started in 1998 by Kevin Williamson, the writer/director that brought us the Scream trilogy and Teaching Mrs. Tingle. He based it on his own coming of age stories.
In season 1 we were introduced to the four main characters, Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), the golden boy Speilburg worshipper and aspiring director, Josephine "Joey" Potter (Katie Holmes), Dawson's own worshipper and the tomboy down the creek with a bad past, Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), Dawson's best friend, second only to Joey, and class clown, and the new girl in Capeside, MA: Jennifer "Jen" Lindley (Michelle Williams), the blonde bombshell from New York who's the only one Dawson has eyes for. Dawson and Jen start a relationship, then break up after Jen reveals to Dawson the true reason she came to Capeside and Dawson acts like a fool about it. Pacey starts a relationship with his english teacher, Ms. Tamara Jacobs, that falls apart after the rest of the school hears about it. Pacey then lies and says that he just made it up in order to exonerate Ms. Jacobs. Joey pines away some more for Dawson, and finally gets him at the end of Season 1.
In Season 2 we get some new characters, the brother and sister duo Andrea "Andie" McPhee (Meredith Monroe), and Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith). Andie started a relationship with Pacey, which failed as Andie started to cope with her mental ilness and finally went to an institution for help. Pacey was heartbroken, but decided to continue the relationship even through a distance. Dawson and Joey were now an item, which Jack, after kissing Joey, ruined. Dawson punched Jack and Joey and Jack started dating. After Dawson told Jack how to write something from the core of his being, Jack wrote his infamous poem, "Today", and struggled with his sexual identity, coming up with the conclusion that he was indeed gay. Dawson and Joey got back together until Dawson found out the truth about her cocaine dealing father and Joey broke up with him.
In Season 3 we had the Fab Six. After Andie returned from the institution, a happy Pacey finds out that Andie cheated on him there. He breaks up with her and starts a sexual relationship with Jen, which doesn't last for long after Dawson and Joey catch them kissing. Pacey then finds a newfound interest in his gal pal, Joey, and pursues a relationship with her, and she responds in earnest. Now all they have to do is tell Dawson, who does not respond with as much earnest as Joey did. Dawson announces that Joey must decide between Pacey and Dawson, and asks her to the prom. Joey then dances with Pacey at the prom, making Dawson mad. Meanwhile, Jack joins the football team, and Dawson makes a short documentary about how he is a gay boy on the football team, causing uproar in Capeside. Jack starts getting letters from people, including one Ben Street...Ben asks Jack to coffee. Jack goes to the coffeehouse only to get scared out of his mind, leading to Ben getting stood up. Jack then finds what he thinks a great guy in Ethan, and asks Ethan to the prom. Jen finds a new boyfriend in Henry Parker (Michael Pitt) even though he is but a freshman. They start dating and they go to the prom. At this now infamous prom, Henry tells Jen that he is leaving for football camp in the summer (now we know, never to return) and Jack kisses Ethan (but not at the prom, a few days after.) Joey sets sail with Pacey in his new boat, True Love.
So far, all that I've managed to get from a few of my friends (thanks a lot, guys) is the following: Joey and Pacey returned from sailing during the summer, to find that Dawson has a new hobby in photography. Dawson, meanwhile, discovers that Pacey's older sister Gretchen (Sascha Alexander) has moved back in town and starts a relationship together. Jack took his new boyfriend, Tobey (David Monahan) to the prom and they kissed.
