Here are some tips from a fellow ADD adult.

FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPAL #1--KEEP IT SIMPLE. (If it takes more than 30 seconds to figure out where to put something, it won't get packed away! RESULT--items will get stacked into dreaded piles.)

FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPAL #2--KEEP IT ACCESSIBLE. (If I have to open more than one drawer/door to put something away, it ain't gonna happen. Memo to self--see Principle #1 for a reminder of PILE ramifications for not putting things away.)

TAMING TACTIC #1---ADD TENDENCY--Lose car keys in house.
RESULTING ANXIETY--Run around like a wild woman, searching for keys when I'm already late for work. (Man it makes me furious to know that I have a large transportation vehicle in my driveway that I can't use because I can't find one small piece of metal!)
TAMING TATIC--place keys in a designated box located on the end table right beside the front door. (We use a decorative wooden box originally used for body lotion and soaps). Hubby and I drop care keys into box as soon as we walk into the house.
STRESS REDUCTION BENEFIT--No more misplaced car keys!
TAMING TACTIC #2--ADD TENDENCY--Take off shoes at front door and never put away in bedroom.
RESULTING ANXIETY--Huge pile of shoes at door. (Good God, another Pile!) Shoes get stepped on and mangled while looking for other shoes. Shoe pile makes opening and closing front door a chore. Can never find two shoes in a pile that match.
TAMING TATIC--Propped a metal shoe rack against the wall right beside the front door. Hang shoes up every few days, when entry area starts getting cluttered. (Wish I could say that I hang them up daily, but...)
STRESS REDUCTION BENIFIT--A shoe rack by the front door isn't the most attractive sight to see, but it works for us! (Just had to get used to identifying shoes by their soles) (Personal note here: I use a large wicker laundry basket, one large one for adults, and one smaller one for kids, and just toss the shoes in it. A contained pile you might say. You can most likely find some sort of shoe cubby to place by the door, a home version of what they have at the fast food play areas.)
TAMING TACTIC #3--ADD TENDENCY--Take off jewelry and throw randomly into jewelry box (if it makes it into the jewelry box at all!)
RESULTING ANXIETY--Can never find jewelry I want to wear. Have to hunt through house and play the "Retrace My Steps" game while anxiety over being late for work grows.
TAMING TACTIC--Finally organized jewelry by using means other than a jewelry box (which didn't work for me.) Devoted drawers of my vanity to jewelry and pulled out my grandmothers old silverware chest storage case. Used bottom half of egg cartons and other objects containing small areas (such as the plastic liners of candy boxes) to line drawers. Assigned a particular type of jewelry to each area. My grandmother's silverware storage box now holds my earrings (Yes, 2 earrings that actually match!!) A smaller drawer holds my pins--one pin per egg carton sectional Another area hold bracelets--you get the idea.
BONUS TIP--Using something portable like my grandmothers silverware case to hold earrings has an added benefit--I start work earlier than my husband, so I am usually getting dressed in mostly dark. It's hard to see the earring selections, so I carry the case out to the kitchen, chose the earrings I want to wear, remove them, and return the case.
STRESS REDUCTION BENEFIT--No more frustrating searches for jewelry. ANYTHING I can do to help ease the stress of preparing for a work day is a God send! (Do our co-workers have any idea what frustrations we ADDers have experienced before we even get to work?!!)
