Penai Sumatra Greneng.

Penai Sumatra Greneng – A very rare example of a short sword of penai of northern Sumatra in origin. Hilt is made of very well selected kemuning woods, and is in the form of the relief makara with and ivory tip. Sheath is having horn top, wooden mid section and a buffalo horn tip.

Very sturdy single edge blade with a sublime arcing profile and a rather tapering tip. The base of the blade has the rare fretworks or grenengs

Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique and are of the kulit semangko or melon’ skin variation.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor hairline cracks, rest is all in very good condition.

Age:  Krises and other edge weapons from the region are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 19th century.

Length of blade: 19.5".   Overall length: 13".
